Reuben,

I had to work with my Paso for about 5 months (NO gaiting!!!!) but he is now my perfect horse. He is a chameleon horse. If you want him to go kiss at him and he is ready. Otherwise he does a fairly decent impression of a laid back quarter horse. Of course he still has the Paso goofiness but that just adds to his charm!!! :)

Angie...It has been YEARS since I have been to Chickasaw. Don't really know why other than whenever I have planned to ride with people they have just never said "let's go to Chickasaw". I remember it being REALLY pretty and pretty rocky.

Yes, Big Hill Pond isnt very big, but its a nice place to ride. Chicksaw is bigger and it is also a very nice place to ride. Its in Henderson TN off of hwy 100. They also have a campsite, that i will be doing most of my camping with horses this year. Its only 30 to 40 mins from me.

Thanks for the reply, Barbara. I just had not ever heard of big hill pond before and wondered where it was. Sounds like the kind of riding I like.

Looks like a nice place to stop on the way through sometime. I'll have to keep it in mind.

That's why I like this horse I'm getting better than others, he'll walk slower when I want to. A horse capable of speed with ease and smoothness is really fun to ride, but I still want to go slow sometimes.

Surely someone has responded to Jean by now but I am not showing it. Big Hill pond is on hwy 57 about 1-1.5 hours south of Jackson. It is not a long ride but is very nice, very nice for a "young" trail rider but not so easy that it is boring for a more seasoned one. There are some nice hills but it is not mountainous by any stretch of the imagination. The hills are decent but gentle, not particularly steep. It is a pleasant ride, mostly wooded but with some pavement and some open areas. There is water but not really that much that you cross, only a couple of places. Don't know how much water there would be right now because of all the rain. It is probably normally a two or two and a half hour ride, a nice day ride especially for when the days are not that long. And Reuben, your paso CAN largo through it in about a half hour but surely he can walk! LOL I don't think largoing through a course is all that fun-you miss way too much of the scenery. And Big Hill has some good scenery. BUT-it is probably going to be really muddy for weeks to come. It does not have a lot of rock. So far I have not ridden any place that I found that I needed shoes (my guy has really good feet) but I don't think anyone would HAVE to have shoes at BHP unless there are hoof issues. It is also far enough off the beaten track that there normally aren't lots of people riding there-I have been there more than once when my group was the only one.

Where is Big Hill Pond?
ReubenT Comment by ReubenT on February 21, 2010 at 8:47pm
Might be fun. I looked, and I wonder, just how rough is it? it can't be any worse than what I got a few dozen miles south on the same mountain. And 6-7 miles seems kind of short. Fraid my new horse would wipe that out in less than an hour and be ready for a few more trips around unless it's awfully rough. Hey, maybe I could ride the route twice. Or is that illegal? LOL. Looks like their timing is more in line with a slow joggin QH instead of a speed rackin fast largo paso fino.
I could walk it myself in 2 hours. I've taken off from home and done 4 miles in an hour except for the steep climbs where I had to stop the clock and catch up on oxygen.

There is a great article on ACTHA in this months Horse and Rider. There will be a competive trail event at True West (just outside of Jamestown) on April 24. This is loads of fun and True West is a great place to stay. Please check out both web-sites. Thanks.
